The movies are definitely great. My only issue is their treatment of Faramir (better with the extended version, but in the original he gets short-changed and it defeats the entire purpose of this character), but minor quibbles considering what it would be like to adapt that monster of a series.

Ah, yeah. I’ve heard that before. Faramir was what tempted me into attempt #5 at reading LotR. 😛 But I agree, those must have been a MONSTER to try to translate into movie form. O_O

Interesting about Lord of the Rings. I did get into it and enjoy it, but it was a project book, like Les Mis, where I set myself a number of pages I would read a day and kept plugging away at dryer moments (and the first half of the first book was dry). Worth the effort for me, but definitely not everyone’s cup of tea and, like Hugo, Tolkien badly needed an editor imho.

The difference for me is that I always enjoy Hugo’s writing.  I may not see how it’s relevant to the plot or why it was included, but at least I enjoy the writing, itself?  Tolkien… I just can’t.  😛  And I’ve TRIED.  I really have.  His writing just doesn’t appeal to me, at all.  -.-;;;  No matter where I pick up in which of the four books, it’s the same thing.  And I guess after trying to force myself through them on no less than 5 separate occasions, I just gave up.  -.-;;;

But I respect the place they hold in fantasy history and I’m glad they exist because so much of the genre stands on their shoulders to jump off.  ^_^

And the movies are fucking AWESOME.  ^________^

I dreamed a dream, or any you still have to do!

I Dreamed a Dream: a book that didn’t live up to your high expectations

Kind of already hit on this with my answer to the “book you read because of the hype,” but that’s not the only one, unfortunately.  Lord of the Rings for sure, too.  I couldn’t get through more than a few pages any time I tried to read them.  -.-;;;  Something about his writing just doesn’t work for me.  And considering that all my friends told me that he was the “father of modern fantasy” and that if I liked fantasy I’d love his books, I was bitterly disappointed by how much I really didn’t.  😛

And I still have like… four I haven’t done yet, so I’ll just pick one more.  ^_^

One Day More: a book that kept you reading into the next chapter (and the next and the next)

(The irony is that this most recently applies to a particular SW fanfic I won’t mention but keep reccing periodically, but THIS IS ABOUT BOOKS.  ^_~)

PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING BY ANNE BISHOP.  OMFG, her writing is like CRACK to me.  I am addicted.  I can’t stay away.  Every time I picked up one of her books, I read it straight through to the end with barely a pause.  (…though I’ll admit that her most recent series didn’t grab me that way, but I’m willing to give it another try eventually.  ^_^)

Definitely LES MIS with headcanons for all of les amis, and fics, and the Stratford/Broadway Jesus Christ Superstar, plus books (it’s so nice to have other people who enjoy DoL and other fantastic books)!

These are Very Good Things to be associated with!  😀  And aw MAN, I miss JCS.  TT^TT  (Though Paul is in a new thing and I’m excited for that!  :D)

And yessssssss DOCTRINE OF LABYRINTHS.  *_*  I honestly think the last time I had this many favorite books in common with anyone it was @tirrasae… and I’ve known her since I was… what?  17?  ^_~  SO, IT’S BEEN A WHILE.  AND I’VE BEEN ENJOYING IT.  ^_^

(Anyone else want to play?)

When I see your URL, I think BOOKS and reading and Les Mis and musicals and ballet and BOOKSBOOKSBOOKS because it’s rare that I find someone who likes so many of the same books I do, but YOU DO and I know you’re a librarian. So. ^_^

doh-rae-me:

Awww thanks! One of the best things in the world is finding someone who reads the same types of books as you do so thanks for being a book friend! And feel free to rec me things since obviously we have great taste! 😉

AGREED.  😀  I think you’ve pretty much read all the ones I would have recced, but I will keep that in mind in the future, for sure.  ^_^  And ditto on your end!

Les Mis, Star Wars, and Doctrine of Labyrinths!

These are a few of my favorite things!  ^_______^

OK, Les Mis, first:

  1. COURFEYRAC, by far and away ^_^
  2. Feuilly
  3. Joly
  4. AND THEN THERE ARE A WHOLE BUNCH WHO TIE FOR 4 AND 5 AND I CAN’T PICK.  *wobble eyes*
    1. But Valjean, Javert, Combeferre, Enjolras, Cosette, M. Myriel, and Gavroche are in there, to name a few.  ^_^

Star Wars:

  1. OBI-WAN OBI-WAN OBI-WAN (…no seriously, can I just list him five times?  Because I would do that.  ^_~  OK, fine…)
  2. Leia Organa & Han Solo (because they really kind of go together for me ^_^)
  3. Qui-Gon Jinn
  4. Anakin
  5. Lando Calrissian & Padme Naberrie (because I REALLY couldn’t choose -.-;;;)

And last but CERTAINLY not least…
Doctrine of Labyrinths:

  1. Mildmay (by a long shot, I agree. ^_^)
  2. Kay Brightmore
  3. Mehitabel Parr
  4. Murtagh / Enid Lemeria / Cardenio / Thamuris (I KNOW I’M TOTALLY CHEATING, BUT THIS IS HARD.  TT^TT)
  5. Felix (because as much as I really love him–and I do!–he is SUCH a dick sometimes)

Anyone else want to send me a fandom?  ^_^

doh rae me answered your post: PSA to my followers:*coughs*  So……

Judging from my dash (ha and my blog actually) you are far from alone! Star Wars definitely took me by surprise with how great it was.

I know what you mean!  😀  My dash has been all-over Star Wars for WEEKS.  I really, REALLY wasn’t expecting it from me, though! The weird thing though, is that it’s not even really the new movie that did it.  It was rewatching all the OLD ones.  I mean, I enjoyed the new movie a lot, don’t get me wrong, but mainly I’m over here squeeing about Obi-Wan.  -.-;;;  But, as you said, at least I’m not the only one!  ;D

“What’s wrong?”

bird: “what’s wrong? want a kiss?”
[bird proceeds to kiss sad bird with small kissing sound]

Oh dear, I’m sorry to hear about your mom. Hope everything turns out to be okay.

Thanks! It should. I mean, it was scary as fuck at the time, but this isn’t the first time she’s ended up in the ER for something like this, you know? So, she should be OK. Mostly this morning she’s irritated because her roommate watched TV all night and kept her awake. So, that’s a good sign. ^_^
