Star Wars Episode IV “A New Hope”
A (probably unsuccessful) long-term attempt to gif every DVD I own: 9 of ?
So I’m picturing Leia getting escorted from her cell for reasons unknown to her, Darth Vader a step behind her, and she’s trying to figure out what’s happening, and then after a few very lengthy elevator rides she round the corner and sees…
this bitch and she just powerwalks to Tarkin, and Vader’s like, wait what, and Leia is honestly excited because here’s a person she knows and hates, and she’s like, “what should I insult? His hair? His family? His personal habits? Can I insult Vader at the same time?” and then doesn’t flinch when Vader bumps her shoulder like “What the hell, Organa,” but just continues with her lil’ diatribe.

I SWEAR THIS IS THE FUCKING FUNNIEST THING IN LES MIS AND NO ONE TALKS ABOUT IT
‘The person I’m crazy over doesn’t like me’
‘Get some new pants to show your legs off I know the best store’
‘OMIGOD HOW MUCH?’
it’s funnier if you know that in one translation, it goes:
“…sweep her off her feet, be elegant, bowl her over. Get yourself a pair of doeskin trousers run up at Staub’s. They stretch.”
and grantaire goes, “how much (do they stretch)?”
This scene gets some of the most drastically varied translations, I swear. But Hana, I do believe you’ve got the direction of the bowling-over wrong, or at least Hapgood thinks so:
“My dear fellow, then in order to please her, you must be elegant, and produce effects with your knees. Buy a good pair of double-milled trousers at Staub’s. They assist.”
BUY A STURDY PAIR OF PANTS so you can USE YOUR KNEES TO GOOD EFFECT. I just. IF THIS IS THE ACCURATE TRANSLATION THEN I UNDERSTAND IT BEING JUMBLED SO MUCH, because wow, Bahorel, you shameless creature.
(Also I have been seriously wondering why it’s always only Courfeyrac given the fashionista concerns when JOLY’S VERY FIRST CONVERSATION IS ABOUT DRESSING FOR ROMANTIC HIJINKS. and Bahorel basically NEVER SHUTS UP about clothes. Also also wondering why Bahorel and Joly don’t get more hanging-out time in fanwork, because they are totally darling with each other this whole conversation. I mean, I’ve drawn SOME, but even still not enough to give them tag. I NEED TO FIX THIS SOON I THINK. )
So I’m a native French speaker and I checked the original French version and Bahorel is indeed telling Joly to get on his knees for Musichetta and I think Victor Hugo had a little too much fun writing this book
